SVCC rebounds for 110-106 win

Coming off of a lopsided loss at VUL, the Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team rebounded on Sunday afternoon to pick up a 110-106 win over Washington Academy in Lawrenceville.

The win improved SVCC to 6-5 on the season, while Washington Academy fell to 13-4.

SVCC guard Anthony Harris had a huge game hitting seven treys and scoring a career-high 41 points with two assists in the victory. Jahmel Johnson finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Kaimonne Douglas added 17 points.

Reggie Dennis scored 15 points, and added 10 assists and six rebounds.

Washington Academy jumped out to a 15-7 lead early in the first half but Harris knocked down two treys and added a short jumper to cut the lead to 20-17 at the 12:57 mark.

Douglas hit a jumper at the 3:30 mark for a 47-38 lead and the local team took a 52-48 lead to the halftime break.

Harris knocked down three straight treys midway through the second half to give SVCC a 78-73 lead at the 11:22 mark.

Washington Academy refused to quit however and fought back but Tevin Holloway hit a trey at the 4:38 mark to give SVCC a 95-94 lead.

Harris hit a trey with 52 seconds left to give SCC a 107-104 lead and the home team hit 3-of-6 from the line over the last 28 seconds to claim the 110-106 win.

SVCC will return home on Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest against VCCS foe Thomas Nelson CC.
