The Lunenburg County Youth Baseball League Majors All-Star team took an early 2-0 lead on Friday but ended up losing by 10 in its first game of the Dixie Youth District 5 Majors All-Star Tournament in Blackstone.
The Prince Edward-Farmville Youth Association All-Stars scored nine runs in the third inning on their way to defeating Lunenburg 13-3 in a mercy rule-shortened contest.
Lunenburg Manager Greg Currin knew what his team was up against, though, referring to PEFYA as likely the toughest team in the tournament.
“I felt like we did alright,” he said. “We struggled in one inning, and they hit the ball well. They’re a good team. We’ve got some good hitters, and we just failed to hit the ball.”
His team scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning on walks, with Ethan Currin and Sterling Currin being pushed to home from third. O’Darius Green scored Lunenburg’s third run in the fourth.
“O’Darius did a fine job pitching,” Manager Currin said.
Despite the loss, Green threw six strikeouts across three innings.
Lunenburg returns to action in the tournament on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Wrigglesworth Stadium in Blackstone.
