Construction of cell tower complete

A new cell tower has been erected in Dundas, according to Lunenburg County Community Development Director Beverley Hawthorne.
The cell tower, owned by Verizon, is located at 1315 Mill Pond Road.
Hawthorne said Verizon approached the county to conduct an investigation for two towers in Lunenburg in 2005. Verizon received the first conditional use permit for both towers before 2010, but did not construct the them at the time.
“They came back to us in 2013 and got another conditional use permit to put up the tower at Rocky Mill Road and at Mill Pond Road at the November board meeting,” Hawthorne said. “They asked for an extension of the original permit on Aug 17, 2015 for the towers at Rocky Mill Road and Mill Pond Road.”
Hawthorne said the county told Verizon it could renew the permit through June 2016 if officials could access the firm’s construction plan. Verizon began construction on the first tower at Rocky Mill Road in December 2015. The tower was completed before the June 30 deadline, but no progress had been made to the tower on Mill Pond Road, Hawthorne said.
“In May, they came back and asked for another extension,” Hawthorne said. “The county gave them the extension in June 2016 and gave them another extension through June 2017. The tower is now up and the equipment is on.”
Representatives with Verizon couldn’t be reached for comment.
