- Lucy “Cookie” Currin (front row, far right), of Lunenburg, president of the host Meherrin Chapter of Colonial Dames XVII Century, welcomes Liz Gielow (front row, far left), of Clarksville, president of the John Goode Chapter, to the joint meeting of the two groups. Others in attendance were Jodie Allen, Diane Daniel, Ann Switzer, Lisa Vaughan, Diane Hoffmeister, Elizabeth Hueske, Vera Jo (V.J.) Springer, Molly Kratt, Cindy Rogers, Patti Carne, Jane Taylor, Nancy Crowder, Perrin Taylor, Analaide Wilkinson, Helen Williams, Nancy Turner, Anne Hamlett, Janie Catherine Ali, Lori Dobson, Mary Anne Oettinger and program presenter June Banks Evans.
A joint meeting was held recently at Waverly Estate, an antebellum home, wedding and special events venue and bed and breakfast located in Lunenburg Court House.
Members of both chapters enjoyed lunch and learned about the history of the house from author and historian June Banks Evans.
According to a club press release, Evans has recently published a monograph, “Dr. Henry May of Lunenburg, Virginia,” proving that the house in which the meeting took place was built for the Lunenburg physician who was the father of Sarah “Sally” May Dooley.
“Mrs. Dooley and her husband created their home — Maymont Estate in Richmond — which bears Mrs. Dooley’s maiden name,” according to the release. “Sarah and Collin Brown, owners of Waverly Estate, treated the guests to a tour of the house and the nearby church which will soon be available for weddings.”
