To the Final Three

Manager Dee Hite said he witnessed some gritty performances from his Lunenburg County Youth Baseball League (LCYBL) Majors All-Star team over the weekend, but he was looking for more from his squad as it began play Tuesday evening in the Final Three of the Dixie Youth Baseball Major League All-Star District 5 Tournament in Victoria.
The Lunenburg squad was undefeated until Monday when it fell narrowly, 6-5, to the Charlotte County All-Stars, a team that it opened against and defeated 4-2 on Saturday and was set to play again Tuesday evening.
“We didn’t hit the ball — it’s that simple,” Hite said of Monday’s game. “Your pitching will only carry you but so far, and if you don’t hit, I ran out of pitching tonight, so I couldn’t really hold them down.”
Pitching has gotten the LCYBL Majors a long way, though, led by Hunter Word. He threw six strikeouts Monday, five strikeouts in a 4-2 Sunday win over the Dinwiddie National All- Stars and six strikeouts in the 4-2 Saturday win over Charlotte County.
Also key on the mound has been Ryan Allard, who threw five strikeouts against Dinwiddie and was expected to play a key role in Tuesday’s game.
Despite Monday’s loss, Seth Bishop hit a three-run homer to give his team a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Hite hopes to see his team play to its full potential on offense.
