The Central Virginia region, including Lunenburg, Victoria, Kenbridge and Rehoboth, are under a flood warning that began 6:15 p.m. and will end 6:15 a.m. the following morning.
Lunenburg County Public Schools has closed schools Tuesday in response to the weather.
“At 6:16 PM EDT, Doppler radar and rainfall reports estimate 3 to 8 inches of rain have fallen across the region since Monday morning,” the flood warning from the National Weather Service (NWS) cited. “This has led to a rapid rise in area rivers and creeks and cause multiple roadways to be closed across the warned area. While the
heavy rainfall has come to an end, the water will take some time to recede. Drivers should exercise caution and not drive into any roads that have water on them.”
The NWS asked that people stay cautious and avoid flooding areas overnight, particularly when driving at night can make it more difficult to recognized flooded roadways.
“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the flood warning cited. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.”
