Joe Nathan Hines, son of John Nathan and Etta Odessa Hines, was born on August 9, 1946 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.

Joe confessed to the Lord at an early age and joined Macedonia Baptist Church, where he served faithfully until his death. He served as Chairman of the Deacon board, Trustee and a member of the Senior Choir.

Joe loved helping people and doing what he could. He had a joyful smile, always speaking a kind word of encouragement to all he knew. His favorite saying was “Give it to the Lord, He will see you through.”

He enjoyed farming and taking rides out on the roadway enjoying life. Joe was loved by his family and many others that knew him.

In his earlier years, Joe was married to Janet S. Hines; to that union, three children were born. Later in life on September 28, 2002, he married Velma Bailey.

Joe departed this life on December 28, 2019 at his home. He is preceded in death by his first wife Janet; one daughter Tanasha; two sisters, Vera H. Streat, Mary H. Brown; three brothers, Lloyd, Jearl and Bobby.

He leaves to cherish his memories, a devoted wife Velma B. Hines of the home; one son, Lonnie Hines of Richmond, VA; one daughter Penny (Allen) Hardy of Victoria, VA; three step-children, Shalotte Thomas, Katina Bailey and Cecil Fowlkes, Jr.; a host of grandchildren; four siblings, Richard (Dorothy) Hines; Ronnie (Minister Geneva) Hines, Thomas (Bernice) Hines all of Meherrin, VA; Minister Joyce (Marvin) Richards of Green Bay, VA; two Godchildren, Tina Rich and Chris Hurt; many sister and brother-in-law’s, Gertrude Hines of Long Island, NY; Lucille Hines of Philadelphia, PA; Patricia B. Hines of Keysville, VA; Carrie Booker, Bruce (Lilibell) Bailey, Clarence (Aletha) Streat, Vernon (Joyce) Marshall, Dorothy Agnew all of Meherrin, VA and Robert Street of North Carolina along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were conducted January 6, at Macedonia Baptist Church, Keysville, with the Rev. Tyrone Brown, pastor. Interment was in the church cemetery.

S.P. Jones and Son Funeral Home served the family.
