The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) is now accepting nominations for the 2020 Community Achievement in the Arts Awards. Nomination forms are available on the LCVA website at https://lcva.longwood. edu/events/2020-community-achievement-arts-award-ceremony. Hard copies are also available at the LCVA and at several downtown business and public facilities. Nominations will be accepted until March 6.

Juanita Giles, the executive director of the Virginia Children’s Book Festival, a past award recipient, noted the importance of this event and its prestigious awards, “While it was a huge honor for the Virginia Children’s Book Festival to receive the LCVA’s Community Achievement in the Arts (CAAs) award, the more poignant honor has been nominating people who have meant so much in my own life. Our lives are full of people who make us who we are, and so more often than not those people never know how much we appreciate them. The CAAs give us the opportunity to give back to those who have given so much.”

The awards, established more than 20 years ago, recognize the individuals, volunteers, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that have enriched lives through their contributions to the arts in Southside Virginia. Last year’s awardees included Martha Dorrill, LeDora Ann Trent, Erin Parker, Henry Fulcher, Rochette’s Florist LLC and Illyria Theatre Company. Since its inception, over 40 individuals, businesses, and organizations have received the award. Nominees will be accepted from the counties of Albemarle, Amelia, Appomattox, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Goochland, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway Powhatan and Prince Edward counties.

Contributions to the visual, performing and literary arts qualify for consideration. Some examples of eligible contributions would include educating and/or advocating, program development, youth and/or adult services, volunteering, festivals and events or staff development. Awardees will be selected and reviewed by the CAA Nominating Committee.

The 2020 award recipients will be celebrated at the LCVA on Friday, April 24, from 5-8 p.m.
