Lunenburg County quickly went from zero cases of the coronavirus to having three people diagnosed as positive for the virus in two days.

The announcement from Lunenburg County Emergency Management posted on the county Facebook page shortly before noon Monday, April 6, stated the first patient is a male in his 50s. The post said the county was informed of the case by the Virginia Department of Health.

No further information is being provided about the case to protect patient confidentiality.

The second case was also announced by county officials Monday afternoon without a description of the person’s age or gender as was the third confirmed case that was posted on the county’s Facebook page shortly after noon Tuesday.

“There will be no additional information about individual cases and the Piedmont Health District Director will not release identifiable information about any cases to avoid releasing a patient’s PHI (Protected Health Information),” the Facebook post from the county read.

Lunenburg was one of the last counties in the state to have a confirmed case of COVID-19. Currently, only 10 counties have not had a diagnosed case of the coronavirus. Statewide, there are 3,333 positively reported cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday morning’s update. Of those, 563 people have been hospitalized and 63 people have died.

The area received some good news Monday morning as a new model from the University of Washington showed the peak day for COVID-19 cases in Virginia will be April 20. That’s earlier than expected, with a lower number of cases and deaths than in previous models.

The total deaths in Virginia are now projected to be just over 1,400. Earlier projections placed the figure at more than 3,000.
