New Gilfield R.Z.U.A. Church, located at 722 Mecklenburg Ave. in Victoria, will hold its inaugural Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Ribbon Sunday at 3 p.m. on Oct. 8.

According to the organizer Nina Bridgeforth, the program will feature a sermon focused on healing and encouraging women to get mammograms often.

“I just went through breast cancer for the last year,” Bridgeforth said. “I was diagnosed last July, 2016, and I am cancer-free, so I am a survivor and I just want people to be aware of going and getting their mammograms so it can be detected earlier.”

Bridgeforth said she felt like when she was battling with breast cancer she didn’t receive help or support, not even from the American Cancer Society (ACS).

“So, what I want to start doing is doing things from the local level where it’s a lot of people right here in our area that suffer with cancer and they need help, they need support,” Bridgeforth said. “So, as a missionary in my church, this is something that I want to start to work on.”

She said pamphlets and bags will be given out during the program so that people will take the issue seriously.

“It’s not just breast cancer, but October is breast cancer month and being that I am a survivor and I know a few people that did not survive within the same time that I was being treated, so that’s what really made me do this,” Bridgeforth said.

She said that a free-will offering will be part of the program.

“Donations (are) always a good thing because the more donations and what we make from the program is going to go out to the community and help support people with cancer. That’s my ministry right now,” Bridgeforth said.
