Central High School’s varsity golf team placed third out of four teams competing in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 1 state tournament at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg on Oct. 9 and 10.

“Overall I thought we did well,” Chargers Head Coach Richard McDaniel said. “We probably could have improved a little bit, but that could be said for every time we play, really. You’ve always got room for improvement. But overall, after seeing the play of the top two teams the first day, first place was probably going to be hard to reach. But as a team, we probably played close to about what we’ve done all year, really.”

In the tourney, which consisted of an 18-hole round each day, Central shot a 730, while Auburn High School won with a score of 643.

Chargers junior Joseph McDaniel shot an 83 on Oct. 9 and an 89 on Oct. 10 for a total score of 172.

“I think Joseph with the 83 on Monday and still shooting in the 80s on Tuesday was a pretty strong showing,” Coach McDaniel said. “I think he ended up finishing 19th out of 43 golfers, which I think is pretty good at the state level.”

Sophomore Cole Williams shot an 88 and 92 for a 180 total, senior Cary Parrish shot a 93 and 89 for a 182 total, senior Noah Dunbar shot a 105 and 92 for a 197 total and junior Thomas McDaniel shot a 104 and 101 for a 205 total.

“Noah’s Tuesday score was a big improvement from Monday that helped us maintain third,” Coach McDaniel said.

Sophomore Mason Elliott has been sidelined by a knee injury, but McDaniel expects him, Williams and the McDaniel boys to be back next season.
