A 20-year-old Meherrin man was recently sentenced in Lunenburg County Circuit Court to 10 years in jail on felony drug convictions, all of which were suspended except on year.

According to the Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Clement, on Sept. 30, 2016 Jones was found in the back seat of a vehicle that was stopped for failing to use a turn signal by Victoria police officer Daniel Medlin. Medlin noticed the odor of marijuana and searched the vehicle and found more than 1 ounce of marijuana divided into two baggies along with scales and $750 cash on Jones along with two cellphones. Clement said Jones was charged and convicted of possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute greater than half an ounce, a felony.

Just 43 days after the traffic stop on Sept. 30, Jones was found in another vehicle that was stopped for a traffic violation in Victoria Nov. 12, 2016.

“A bag of marijuana was found on the floorboard next to Jones’ left foot,” Clement said. “This amounted to less than half ounce and was charged as a misdemeanor.”

Medlin also found mushrooms in a plastic baggie that tested positive for a schedule I drug. Jones was found guilty of this felony.

The active sentence given by Circuit Judge S. Anderson Nelson is within the recommendation of the sentencing guidelines. In addition to the time he will serve, the defendant will be subject to conditions of good behavior for 10 years, supervised probation for two years, counseling, warrantless searches for five years and suspension of driver’s license for 18 months after his release.
