Kenston Forest School’s varsity girls volleyball team had a big day Thursday, earning a share of the Virginia Colonial Conference (VCC) regular season title to conclude its regular season schedule.

Hosting the Southampton Academy Lady Raiders, Kenston Forest came back to win.

“They won the first (set), and we won the next three, so that was huge for us, and that put us in a tie for first place with Southampton,” Lady Kavaliers Head Coach Jannon Coley said.

Kenston Forest had lost 3-0 earlier in the season to the Lady Raiders but wrote a different story Thursday which could be particularly important if the teams cross paths again in the state tournament.

“We were just prepared,” Coley said. “They have one certain girl that we wanted to block, and she’s the main one, so basically, we were prepared to double block her and kind of shut her down, and that’s how we did it on the varsity level.”

Kenston Forest’s junior varsity (JV) team lost 2-0 to Southampton on Thursday, while the middle school team won 2-1.

The Lady Kavs varsity team (15-5, 12-2 in the VCC) became the No. 1 seed in the VCC tournament after a coin flip and hosted No. 8 Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

With a win, the Lady Kavs will face either No. 4 Brunswick Academy or No. 5 Amelia Academy on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals, hosted by Brunswick.

The championship match is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. at Brunswick.

Kenston Forest’s JV squad (8-4, 7-4 in the VCC), which is in third place in the conference, travels to play Southampton again Wednesday evening, this time as part of the conference tournament semifinals. If the Lady Kavs win, they will advance to Saturday’s title match, also hosted by Brunswick.

The Kenston Forest middle school team is done for the season.

“Our middle school team ended up 12-1 for the season, so I can’t complain,” Coley said. “I tell you what, it’s been a great group of girls and a great year.”
