Students at Victoria Elementary School donned colorful costumes based on their favorite storybooks during the school’s annual Character Day Parade, held at the school bus loop on Oct. 31.

Costumes included characters from “Where the Wild Things Are,” “Charlotte’s Web” The Harry Potter Series, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” and “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.”

Princesses, superheroes, vampires and werewolves also made a strong showing during the parade.

Kathleen Drummond, who attended the parade to see her grandson, who dressed as Spider-Man, said she remembers seeing her own children take part in the parade years ago, when it was held at Victoria’s Main Street.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Drummond said.

Families and friends lined the edges of the bus loop, breaking into enormous smiles and cheering on their children and grandchildren.

School Principal Casey Jackson noted that many of the students and teachers have worn the costumes all day, making for a lot of fun while they took part in classes or walked through the hallways.

“The adults have had just as much fun,” Jackson said, who wore a shawl designed to look like a spider web.

“I thought it was a good turnout,” Jackson said, noting the families, teachers and students who took part in the parade.

The school, as well as Kenbridge Elementary School, have held a series of activities and events meant to encourage children to become enthusiastic about reading, including school-wide readings of “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White and hosting the “Reading under the Stars” event, which took place at Victoria Railroad Park on Oct. 11.
