The Lunenburg Lightning youth football team in the 12- to 13-year-old division had an outstanding season, advancing to the Super Bowl at Prince Edward County High School where they came up just short Saturday afternoon.

“We lost to Buckingham in a close defensive game 8-7,” said Lunenburg Lightning League Commissioner Mike McGrath. “Both teams played well, and it came down to turnovers and missed opportunities.”

The Lightning were undefeated coming into the title game and were quite familiar with their opponent.

“They had defeated Buckingham twice in the regular season, 20-7 and 14-12, so beating a team a third time was a difficult task,” McGrath said.

He noted that the Lunenburg Lightning varsity team has now been to two consecutive Super Bowls. It came up short in 2016 as well, but only after a valiant battle that went to overtime.

“This speaks volumes to make it to the final game two years straight,” McGrath said, noting the team and its coaches have demonstrated great effort and dedication.

The team’s coaches included Kenny Evans, Nelson Hicks, Robbie Bishop and Michael Sullivan.

The Lightning finished the season with a record of 9-1.
