An assortment of events held Saturday by the Lunenburg Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9954 sought to engage the community and rallied support for area veterans and their families, according to VFW organizers.

A Veterans Day event held Saturday at the VFW Post on 1000 Marshall Ave. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. allowed participants to enjoy food, the chance to meet VFW members and tour an addition to the post completed in July.

Post 9954 Commander Claude Tomlinson said he wasn’t able to estimate the number of people from the community who attended, but said members of the VFW Post deemed the event a success.

“It went very well,” Tomlinson said in a phone interview.

The Veterans Day celebrations from the VFW were not limited to the Post building. Representatives from the VFW Post 9954 Auxiliary

distributed poppies in locations throughout Victoria and Kenbridge to raise funds for area veterans and their families.

Event coordinator Deborah Misorski said approximately 10 women distributed the artificial poppies made by disabled veterans at the Food Lion and Victoria Little B in Victoria, and at the Shoppers Value, an Exxon gas station and the gas station across from the Slip-In Food Mart in Kenbridge.

Misorski estimated that more than 600 poppies were distributed Saturday.

She said the poppies are symbols created by the VFW meant to honor service members who have died.

Misorski thanked members of the community and volunteers for taking part in the fundraiser.

“We really do thank all of the residents in the area that support us,” Misorski said. “We do a lot for our veterans and their families.”
