Kenston Forest School’s varsity girls basketball team experienced

start to the 2017-18 season, but since then, the Lady Kavaliers have begun to put together some wins.

They have won three out of their last five games and hold a 4-5 record going into a brief winter hiatus.

Lady Kavs Head Coach Jannon Coley said she doesn’t think her team’s performance has been bad at all so far, even in the face of some disadvantages.

“We’re kind of down a few players,” she said. “I’ve got two that are injured who haven’t been able to play at all.”

In addition to one of the team’s three freshmen, junior Charlotte Walker is sidelined by injury.

The number of available players on the 11-player roster has shrunk to nine.

“We’ve got to try to be in shape and go with what we have,” Coley said. “So, yeah, it’s been kind of tough.”

But the resilience the girls on her team have shown has left her feeling quite positive.

“All in all, I think I’m impressed with what we have so far …,” she said. “Right now we’re 1-0 in the conference, so that’s good, and we really won’t have any more conference play until we come back after Christmas.”

Kenston Forest returns to action Friday, Dec. 29, at 5 p.m. against host Temple Christian School.

The Lady Kavs hosted Temple Christian on Nov. 27 and won 42-41.

“So hopefully we’ll get a good win out of that, and then get ready to start conference play …,” Coley said.

Though she was uncertain as of Tuesday morning, the coach said her team could have its injured players back by Dec. 29.

In their most recent performance, the Lady Kavaliers fell 40-31 to host Isle of Wight Academy on Monday.

“Isle of Wight’s always a very tough team to play, physically,” Coley said. “They’re very aggressive, and I thought we did very well. I tell you what kind of hurt us — from the free throw line we were only 3-for-12, 25 percent. So I’m going to be honest with you, that would have helped if we had made a few more of those. But I think only losing by nine, that’s not a bad game for us, and I thought we played fairly well.”

Leading Kenston Forest in scoring were seniors Indigo Dougherty and Josie Epperson with 10 points apiece.

The Lady Kavs’ home game against Virginia Episcopal School, originally set for Friday, was canceled due to inclement weather.

Kenston Forest played the night prior, though, and orchestrated a 42- 22 victory over visiting Virginia Colonial Conference foe Tidewater Academy.

“We kind of called everything off a little bit and everybody got a good chance to play a whole lot, and I thought they did very well,” Coley said of her players.

Junior guard Macie Coley led the Lady Kavaliers with 11 points, Epperson, a center/forward, contributed 10 points and Dougherty, a guard/ forward, also contributed 10 points.
