Central High School’s junior varsity boys basketball team will be looking to make substantive progress each week this season due to its overall youth and inexperience.

Three players from the 2016-17 team moved up to the varsity squad.

The 2017-18 JV roster features five sophomores and six freshmen.

Michael Atkins served as head coach of the team.

Meanwhile, Chargers Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Mike McGrath keeps track of how the JV squad is doing and provided an evaluation of its expected leaders.

He noted the team’s point guard will be freshman Tyler McGrath.

“He is a good ball handler and shooter,” the coach said.

The elder McGrath highlighted freshman shooting guard Cameron Kates, pointing out that “he is good at driving to the basket.”

The coach said sophomore forward Dalton Ashworth “plays smart and has a good shot.”

Sophomore forward Matthew Warren is in his first year, and he will help on the boards, McGrath said.

Lastly, the coach cited sophomore center Shamond Sellers as a good rebounder and defensive player.

First-year players on the team include freshmen Hunter Hinkle, Marquise Bell, Rashaun Richardson and Thomas Archer.

“All are hard workers and getting better every practice,” McGrath said.

After opening the season Tuesday, the Chargers play their home opener Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. versus Buckingham.
