We have recently introduced a series of articles called “Know Your Neighbor.” It is a fun opportunity to acquaint ourselves and you with people in your community through a short story that gives insights — both serious and lighthearted — into who they are.

We would like to commend a group of individuals who, in a different way, have been writing their own “Know Your Neighbor” series for many years — the nurses of Lunenburg Health Service (LHS) Inc.

LHS is a nonprofit organization that delivers assistance to people who need it the most. It offers a clinic that assists people with critical and chronic diseases, and its services includes changing sterile dressings, monitoring diabetes and diabetes care, helping recently hospitalized patients and conducting welfare checks after visits.

LHS just celebrated its 70th year in operation, and throughout that history, there have been only six nurses at the organization.

“It’s a nice place to work, so we stay here for a while,” said Deborah Craven, an LHS-licensed professional nurse who has been at LHS for 17 years.

Craven and other nurses will often go to their patients’ homes to deliver care, and something that makes the organization unique in delivering care is that its employees’ patients are often their neighbors or people they have known for years in the community.

Craven rightly pointed out that you can take care of people better if you have a personal relationship with them.

We applaud LHS and its nurses for 70 years of getting to know community members while providing them with much-needed assistance.
