A Lunenburg County Circuit Court judge imposed an additional six years in prison recently for a 29-year-old man who was sentenced 25 years in jail last year for felony homicide and felony child abuse in connection to the death of his 15-month-old stepdaughter, Aja Cofield, in 2016.

According to a press release, Lunenburg County Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Clement said that he filed a Show Cause Order against Mario Davis for failing to be of good behavior on a 2010 conviction for Distribution of Cocaine for which he had nine years suspended.

“A Lunenburg County jury found Davis guilty of the killing of the child on April 18, 2017 and recommended a sentence of a total of 25 years in prison,” officials cited in the release. “Judge Nelson affirmed the sentence on July 18, 2017.”

The release cited that the additional six years in prison will run consecutively with the 25 years for a total of 31 years in prison, of which Davis will serve 85 percent according to the current law applied to prison sentences.

In the trial regarding the death of Cofield, Davis maintained that the child fell down a stairway inside their house at 513 Lunenburg Ave. in Victoria, but two medical experts testified that this was not possible due to the nature of the injuries and that the child had suffered extreme force by way of what they termed “rapid acceleration and deceleration and blunt force.”

The release cited this means vigorously shaking the child and hitting the child’s head against a harder object.
