Central High School’s varsity boys basketball team opened the week with a 70-47 blowout of host Amelia County High School on Monday.

“We played pretty well,” Chargers Head Coach Mike McGrath said. “If we could play that well every night, our record would be a whole lot better.”

Entering Tuesday night’s road game against Prince Edward County High School, Central had a record of 3-12 overall, 3-9 in the district.

“Our rebounding and ball distribution was pretty good last night,” McGrath said Tuesday morning.

Chargers senior guard/forward Darryl Jones led all scorers with 28 points on 54 percent shooting (13-for-24), and senior guard L.J. Watson scored 18 points.

Central also got key contributions from insider players like senior center Ethan Hoover, who had 17 points, four assists, four blocks and two steals, and senior forward Ben Spencer, who had six points and 12 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds.

“When I get some good stuff out of my post guys, we’re going to have a good chance of winning …” McGrath said.

Jones had a double-double, also grabbing 10 rebounds, and Watson recorded five steals and handed out four assists.

Health has been a factor for the Chargers this year, but McGrath said his core players are all healthy now.

After Tuesday’s game, Central has three regular season games remaining. It hosts Cumberland County High School on Thursday and Amelia on Friday, and it visits Nottoway High School on Wednesday, Feb. 7. All games are set to have 7 p.m. tipoffs.

Based on the relatively small margin of defeat in Central’s previous showdowns with Prince Edward, Cumberland and Nottoway, McGrath, on Tuesday, said that he expects all three of those rematches “to be pretty tough battles.”
