SVCC tops Southern Maryland, 102-94

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team picked up a pair of wins at home over the weekend, including a hard-fought 102-94 win over the College of Southern Maryland.
The two wins improved SVCC to 4-4 on the season.
The Panthers played a brutal first semester schedule, facing four teams ranked in the national polls.
SVCC earned its first-ever win over a Top 10 team after downing Bryant & Stratton 83-73 a week ago.
The Southern Maryland Hawks came into town on Saturday riding a five-game winning streak, but hot outside shooting from SVCC helped the local team claim the victory.
SVCC jumped out to a 13-10 lead early on a bucket by Wally Daniel at the 15:20 mark of the first half and took a 29-23 lead on a rebound and putback by Jahmel Johnson at the 8:30 mark.
Anthony Harris hit his fourth and fifth treys of the first half over the last 26 seconds to give SVCC a 49-46 halftime lead.
Tied at 82 at the 6:03 mark of the second half, SVCC went on a 10-2 run behind four points from Kaimonne Douglas and three from Harris.
SVCC hit 9 of 10 from the free-throw line over the final two minutes to seal the victory.
Harris led SVCC with a career-high 26 points while Douglas added 20 points and five rebounds, all coming in the second half.
Wally Daniel scored a season-high 16 points and tallied six assists while Cavan Bryant totaled 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks.
Johnson also added a double-double for the Panthers with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
SVCC earned its second win of the weekend after topping the B&S JV team 97-87 on Sunday afternoon.
The local team went to the break trailing 41-39, but got it going in the second half as two free-throws by Douglas and a bucket by Harris gave SVCC a 70-65 lead at the 8:36 mark.
A bucket by Johnson on a rebound and putback and a layup and deep trey by Harris extended the SVCC lead to 77-69 at the 6:31 mark.
A short jumper by Douglas and two free-throws at the 2:12 mark gave SVCC a 90-82 lead on the way to the victory.
Harris totaled 24 points and five assists in the game for SVCC while Douglas added 24 points and three assists.
Reggie Dennis scored 16 points and added nine rebounds and nine assists while Bryant totaled 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Johnson also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Jonte Harris also added six rebounds for SVCC in the game.
