Central High School’s varsity golf team won the Class 1 Region B Championship for the second straight year Monday, as the Chargers put significant distance between themselves and the rest of the six-team field at The Manor Golf Club in Farmville.
“It’s nice to win back-to-back, especially with my two being seniors,” Central Head Coach Richard McDaniel said, referring to his twin sons, golfers Joseph and Thomas McDaniel.
The Chargers shot a combined 336, which ended up being 21 strokes better than their nearest competitor, William Campbell High School. Last year, Central shot a 344 and beat Stonewall Jackson High School, of Quicksburg, by 11 strokes.
On Monday, Chargers junior Cole Williams was named the Region 1B Player of the Year after producing the lowest individual 18-hole score of the tournament — a 76.
Reflecting on what his regional award meant, Williams said, “It just means you played the best golf here.”
Coach McDaniel was also named regional Coach of the Year.
Joseph McDaniel shot an 83, sophomore Hogan Whitlow recorded an 86 and Thomas McDaniel shot a 91.
Central plays for the state title Monday and Tuesday in Big Stone Gap.
