Central High School freshman NyJae’ Carter and junior Shamond Sellers gained state-level competitive experience this past weekend when they participated in the Virginia High School League Class 1 Outdoor Track and Field State Championships at East Rockingham High School in Elkton.
Carter and Sellers placed as highly as ninth at the state meet.
It was the boys triple jump in which Carter claimed ninth with a 37-foot-8-inch leap. Entering the meet, his seed jump was 38-1.
Sellers placed ninth in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.28 seconds. It was just slightly slower than his seed time of 16.92 seconds.
Carter placed 10th in the boys long jump, recording a 19-10 leap. His seed jump was 21-2 1/2.
He also competed in the boys 100-meter dash, placing 16th by crossing the finish line in 11.94 seconds. The time was narrowly slower than his seed time of 11.84 seconds.
Central looks to return much of its talent next year as the program featured only three seniors for this outdoor season: Briana Elder, Ladasha Robertson and Jakeriah Spraggins.
