Victoria residents will have to wait a little longer to see if they will be allowed to take a dip in the town pool this summer.

During the Tuesday, June 9, Victoria Town Council meeting, Town Manager Rodney Newton advised the council that the pool opening remained in a holding pattern.

Under Virginia’s reopening plan, pools are allowed to reopen for lap swimming, diving, swim lessons and exercise in Phase 2, the phase the state is currently in. But there must be 10 feet of separation between users. Everyone who comes to the pool must also be screened to determine if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or have not been in contact with an infected person.

Newton has said in the past, the pool is not configured to allow for lap swimming. According to the minutes of the meeting, Newton is talking with representatives of Lunenburg County Public Schools to determine a start date for school reopening. That information may factor into whether Victoria attempts to open the pool or not.

The Town of Farmville has already decided not to open its pool this summer but not because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Town officials said thousands of dollars in repairs needed to make the pool operational was the reason the pool will remain closed.
