An arrest has been made in connection with Kenbridge’s first slaying in years, police said.

Jason Lee, of Kenbridge, turned himself in and was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the Thursday, March 17, slaying, said a Facebook post by the Kenbridge police department referenced by Chief Raymond Hite Friday morning.

Lee is accused of the slaying of 19-year-old Jamel Williams,  of Poorhouse Road, and will appear in district court later this week to be advised on his right to counsel.

Hite said that the preliminary autopsy report and the investigation led authorities to believe the weapon used was a knife. It has not been found, he said.

“Still looking,” he noted.

Kenbridge police responded to a call of an assault on Center Street at about 2 p.m., the statement said.

“Kenbridge Police arrived on scene and saw a subject in the roadway that had been assaulted,” the statement noted. “The subject later died of his injuries from the assault.”

Hite said that once officers arrived, “The crime scene was secured and a search for the suspect and interviewing of witnesses began.”

Lee turned himself in later in the evening and a warrant was obtained from a magistrate charging him with first-degree murder, the statement said.

“I would also like to thank the citizens that assisted, the community’s help makes a difference in any case,” Hite wrote in the posting.

“The statement noted that the investigation is ongoing and any information is appreciated,” the statement noted.

Virginia State Police, Victoria Police and Lunenburg Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.

Hite said shortly after the slaying that he believes this is the first murder the town has had in approximately six years, and maybe the third the town has had in the last 20 years. He said he believes there was a double murder about five years ago.
