Alfredo Cruz Torres, a 45-year-old Harrisonburg man, was sentenced recently in Lunenburg County to an active sentence of three years in prison on convictions of driving under the influence of alcohol, fifth offense and driving as a habitual offender.

According to Lunenburg County Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Clement, Torres was caught in the radar of Virginia State Trooper Thomas W. Reeves on Sept. 6, traveling 67 miles-per-hour in a 45 miles-per-hour zone. The trooper noticed the odor of alcohol and had him perform some field sobriety tests, which he failed. The breathalyzer test revealed an alcohol level of 0.23, nearly three times the legal limit, according to Clement.

Torres had four previous convictions of driving under the influence, and one previous conviction of driving as a habitual offender in 2004 in Rockingham County for which he served two years in prison.

In addition to the active prison sentence, Torres will also have seven years suspended subject to conditions of good behavior for 10 years, supervised probation for two years, warrantless searches, and substance abuse counseling. He was also fined $1,000 and had his license suspended indefinitely, Clement said.
