A tribute to our veterans

I am proud that Virginia is stepping forward to recognize the service and sacrifice that families have given in service to our nation. Last year we created a work group, on which I am honored to serve, that is focused on remembering World War II as we approach the 75th anniversary of that war. This year, the Virginia General Assembly expanded the scope of our commission recognizing the 100th anniversary of World War I.

The belief being that we can better educate the citizens of Virginia of the trials and tribulations of both wars if we show how our citizens were affected by both wars.

We began last year with the plans to have a kickoff event on Dec. 8. Billed as “A Tribute to Veterans/75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor,” this event will be held at the University of Richmond Robins Center and simulcast to locations around the state. One reason this site was selected was the ease of getting veterans in that might be in wheelchairs or have other ambulatory issues.

The event will be free, but registration will be required to ensure that we have enough lunches and volunteers to assist those that need help.

The morning will have presentations, but the afternoon will be reserved for videotaping oral histories, media interviews and other activities.
