Victoria Fire and Rescue responded to a structure fire at the Victoria laundry mat Monday,  at approximately 9:30 p.m., said Rodney Newton, the department’s chief.

One Victoria firefighter was injured at the scene and transported to the hospital and was released early Tuesday morning, Newton said.

Initial reports to Lunenburg Sheriff’s Office dispatch center said flames were visible, and first arriving units found heavy fire involvement in west end of the building, he said.

The fire consumed a wooden trash bin on the end of the building and extended into the attic area of the building, Newton said.

“The fire was quickly knocked down by the first arriving firefighters which prevented further damage,” he said. “The damage was contained to the west end of the building with minimal damage to the equipment in the structure.”

The owner of the business is already moving on reopening, Newton, who is also the acting town manager, told the council at its meeting the evening after the fire.

Kenbridge Fire Department provided assistance at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Victoria Police Department and Virginia State Police.
