After months of discussion, Kenbridge’s efforts to erect new signs took a major step as the town council has finally decided to order them.

“We’ve come this far, we might as well pull the trigger,” Mayor Emory Hodges told the council at its April meeting, where the council voted to order the signs.

The town already has budgeted for them, he said.

Councilmember Cathy Gilley agreed.

“It’s in the budget, we might as well go on and get them,” she said.

Council plans to put the new signs on S. Broad Street at the town limits, near Virginia Marble Manufacturers Inc., and on K-V Road. They would like to use the existing bases where possible, but, one sign is being relocated to the other side of the road and, in the case of the stand on K-V Road, work will be needed to the foundation.

Kenbridge is looking to spruce up its entrances with the new signs, spending months talking about the design before settling on blue with a three-leaf symbol that is a nod to the town’s tobacco heritage.

The town wanted the signs to be similar to those in Victoria, with Hodges noting, “I think their signs look pretty good.”

Early on, Mayor Emory Hodges said he wanted the signs to be simple.

“We want you to know you’ve come into Kenbridge, and you’re welcome,” he said a few months ago as he outlined the intent of the new signs.
