Clutch play in the final minutes from seniors Dominique Turman-Watson and TanJaNeKa White-Freeman lifted the Central High School varsity girls basketball team to a 50-49 victory over host Prince Edward County High School on Friday evening.

The Lady Chargers were playing without star senior center/forward Bri’Anna Johnson, who injured her ankle in Central’s season-opening 42-19 home win over Randolph-Henry High School on Wednesday. She will be out for two weeks, but Head Coach Scott Wilson was pleased to see his team’s resilience Friday.

“It shows that we can still battle hard to get some victories,” he said. “It’s a team effort, and we proved it tonight.”

Lady Chargers senior guard Brittany Dolan led all scorers in the game with 15 points, while Turman-Watson had 13 points, senior forward/center MyYonte’ Jennings contributed 10 points, senior forward Ashley Genova had seven and White-Freeman added five, including the deciding free throw with 9.3 seconds left in the game.

“We work on free throws every day,” Wilson said. “That was always a tough spot for us last year. We probably spend 30 to 40 minutes every day just making the foul shots. That’s what makes the difference in a game, making all those free throws at the end.”

White-Freeman led Central in its win over Randolph-Henry by scoring as many points as the Lady Statesmen — 19.

She provided key leadership in the absence of Johnson, who was sidelined in the first quarter of the game.

“It’s good to be 2-0 after the first week,” Wilson said.

The Lady Chargers visit Nottoway High School on Friday at 7 p.m. after hosting Buckingham County High School on Tuesday.
