The Central High School varsity girls basketball team went 0-2 last week, suffering losses in both tight and blowout fashions.

The Lady Chargers visited powerhouse Nottoway High School on Friday and fell 52-18.

“We didn’t quit,” Central Head Coach Scott Wilson said, pleased his team “didn’t get frustrated and down for this week’s games against William Campbell and Bluestone. That was the main thing is try not to get discouraged.”

The Lady Cougars were a team that qualified for the state tournament last season, and Wilson said they have essentially the same team back this year.

Nottoway did not score for the first couple of minutes Friday, but once the Lady Cougars got on the scoreboard, “they pretty much broke it open,” Wilson said.

They led 26-2 after the first quarter, 34-8 at halftime and 50-13 after three quarters.

Senior guard TanJaNeKa White-Freeman led Central with eight points, senior forward Ashley Genova added six and junior center Megan Dech chipped in four.

On Dec. 6, the Lady Chargers lost 49-47 to visiting Buckingham County High School in overtime.

“The one thing that I’ve been preaching on from day one is making our foul shots, and against Buckingham in regulation, we were 3-of-11,” Wilson said. “And in the overtime, we were 1-of-6. That’s the difference of the game. We make our foul shots in regulation, the game’s not going in overtime. So, we know what we have to work on.”

He said Central is shooting 32 percent from the free throw line through four games this season.

The Lady Chargers have had three different leading scorers in the absence of injured star senior center/forward Bri’Anna Johnson. Senior forward/guard Dominique Turman-Watson led Central with 20 points against Buckingham.

Johnson is back this week as Central (2-2), which visited William Campbell High School on Tuesday, hosts Bluestone High School on Thursday.
