The Central High School varsity girls basketball team has put itself in a good position six games into the 2016-17 season with a 4-2 record.

“We’re off to a nice start,” Lady Chargers Head Coach Scott Wilson said. “The first four games, we played without Bri’Anna Johnson, and the girls stepped up in her absence, and that was really good.”

With Johnson back, the team is even stronger and on a 2-game winning streak.

One impressive quality in particular that the team has demonstrated to Wilson thus far is resiliency.

“What I really like is that the girls have shown we can play on the road, get behind in the fourth quarter and pull it together at the end and pull out the victory,” he said. “I’ve also been pleased by how in most of the games, we get off to a nice fast start.”

He hopes to see that effort in all four quarters moving forward, preventing teams from creeping back into the game.

Wilson said that the way the James River District is shaping up, every game will feature a difficult match-up that will go down to the wire, with games against conference rival Cumberland High School being particularly important.

The Lady Chargers return to action Wednesday, Jan. 4, on the road against Goochland High School with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
