The Kenston Forest School varsity girls basketball team endured two blowout losses over the weekend and bounced back by creating a blowout win Monday, topping host Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School 54-38.

Lady Kavaliers Head Coach Jannon Coley said she thought her players did very well, though they had to recover from a slow start.

“The first half I was a little unsure about,” she said. “They weren’t playing up to their potential, but they came around the second half and brought it back.”

Kenston Forest trailed 9-4 after the first quarter, 21-18 at halftime and 32-28 after three quarters but then outscored Blessed Sacrament Huguenot 26-6 in the final period.

“We won that game in the fourth quarter,” Coley said. Before then, shots were not falling, and “we had a lot of turnovers. We were throwing the ball away a lot.”

Leading the way for the Lady Kavaliers was junior Indigo Dougherty with 15 points. Senior Savannah Gunn recorded 13 points, sophomore Emily Hawthorne added nine, junior center Josie Epperson contributed eight points, senior Mackenzie Coley had five and senior Mary Katherine Coleburn added four.

On Saturday, Kenston Forest fell 59-25 to visiting Richmond Christian School.

“Terrible game for us,” Coley said, noting that her team had different expectations after losing only 61-50 to the Lady Warriors on Dec. 17. “We thought it would be a good game, and was just kind of an off-day for us. We had Amelia (Academy) the night before, and we lost to them,” with a score of 59-27.

The first 2016-17 Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association girls basketball state rankings came out Jan. 10 with Amelia ranked No. 1 in Division III and Richmond Christian ranked No. 3. The Lady Kavs are ranked No. 7.

Kenston Forest (8-5) hosts Brunswick Academy on Friday at 7 p.m. and visits Isle of Wight Academy on Saturday at 4 p.m.
