The dynasty of Kenston Forest School’s varsity golf team continued Monday as the Kavaliers edged Southampton Academy to win their fifth straight conference tournament championship.
Kenston Forest produced a score of 374, two strokes better than Southampton’s 376 in the Virginia Colonial Conference (VCC) tournament at The Cardinal Golf Club in Fort Lee.
The Kavaliers were the model of consistency on the way to winning their ninth VCC title overall.
“We played about the way we had played all season,” Kenston Forest Head Coach John Allen said. “Our score was in line with our season average.”
Though one of the Kavs’ best golfers, Tyler Borum, was limited by a bad back on the day, they proved to have a deep lineup.
“We were helped by younger members of the squad whose scores ending up counting,” Allen said. “We won on depth of team.”
The individual results illustrated this clearly. It might be expected that the team winning the championship would have an individual golfer produce the top score in the tournament or produce a score in the top three.
While Kenston Forest did not, “we were the only team to have five players break 100,” Allen said.
Cole Hagaman, of the Kavaliers, placed fourth overall with an 88, earning an all-conference recognition.
“Colton Carter, playing No. 6, really came through with a 92,” Allen said.
Carter ended up placing sixth overall. Scoring a 96 was Sam Hodges, Hogan Whitlow carded a 98 and Tyler Daniel also generated a 98.
Kenston Forest was obviously locked in a strong rivalry with Southampton leading right up to the tournament. The Kavaliers lost to the Raiders by 12 strokes in a regular season match May 2 and then fell by only one stroke to the Raiders on Thursday before beating them Monday.
“I am proud of how our kids handle pressure,” Kavaliers Assistant Coach Keith Green said. “Our kids play fairly loose, which is key in golf.”
Allen and Green repeated as VCC Coaches of the Year in golf.
Rounding out Monday’s field was Banner Christian School, placing third with a 396, Brunswick Academy, placing fourth with a 398 and Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School, placing fifth with a 416.
Kenston Forest currently holds an 18-6 overall record, 16-3 in the VCC.
As of Tuesday, the Kavs were tied for eighth in the state in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Assocition Division II rankings. The top eight teams make it to the state tournament, and the Kavaliers will find out next week if they make the cut.
