Kenston Forest School’s varsity softball team advanced through the Virginia Colonial Conference (VCC) tournament last week and finished as runner-up to archrival Southampton Academy (SA) in the championship game May 10.

“Both teams were strong on the mound, but SA took the lead and won 3-2 in Wednesday’s action,” Lady Kavaliers Head Coach Jannon Coley said. “Kenston lost despite outhitting SA nine to eight.”

Lydia Wrenn, who made the VCC All-Tournament Team, was stellar in the circle, recording 18 outs for the game.

On offense, Savannah Gunn and Molly Epperson produced multiple hits apiece for the Lady Kavs, while Wrenn, Josie Epperson, Rebecca Hadley, Rachel Tucker and Berkley Rose each registered one hit.

Recording the team’s two RBIs were Molly Epperson and Hadley.

On May 9, the day prior, Kenston Forest claimed the lead in the fifth inning of a previously scoreless VCC tournament semifinal game against Brunswick Academy and went on to win 4-1.

Wrenn helped provide the deciding run when she hit a two-run double.

The Lady Kavaliers generated a wealth of hits during the game, ending up with 12.

Logging multi-hit games were Wrenn, Molly Epperson, Gunn and Rose. Epperson went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Haley Henshaw, Tucker and Hadley notched one hit apiece.

In acknowledgment of their outstanding performances across both the semifinal and title games, Molly Epperson, Hadley and Wrenn were named to the VCC All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Kavaliers were also VCC regular season runners-up.

Kenston Forest (12-11) holds the No. 4 seed in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III state tournament and was set to face No. 5 Portsmouth Christian School on Tuesday afternoon, but the Lady Patriots forfeited.

Consequently, the Lady Kavs advance to play in the state semifinals Thursday at the Dinwiddie Sports Complex.
