The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors agreed to move forward with a proposed location for a trash disposal convenience center following a public hearing where no participants spoke on behalf of the site location.

The hearing was held during Thursday’s board of supervisors meeting.

The public hearing centered on a conditional use permit that would allow a proposed trash disposal convenience center location on the south west side of the intersection of Oral Oaks Road, Route 635, and Gary Road, Route 644, on parcels of land totaling four acres.

Convenience centers allow residents to dispose of household trash and recyclable materials.
Waste disposal and recycling company Container First Services (CFS) hauls trash and recycling from each of the area’s five convenience center sites and landfills in Lunenburg, Kenbridge and Victoria.

The board opened the hearing for members of the public to give input on the location.

No one from the public spoke or signed up to speak.

Lunenburg County Economic and Community Development Director Beverley Hawthorne spoke during the hearing, and said parcel owners at the intersection — Virginia H. Wilson and Mary Sue Broadie, et al from the Life Estate of Willie M. and Edna B. Tisdale — first approached Love’s Mill District Representative Edward Pennington about the land.

After meeting with Pennington and Hawthorne, Hawthorne said Wilson and Ms. Tisdale allowed the land to be used.

“They agreed to give permission to go forward with this conditional use permit,” Hawthorne said.

Hawthorne said the board had looked for possible locations along the mid-southern part of Lunenburg County.

Hawthorne said during a planning commission meeting and public hearing that no members of the public were against the location, and the commission voted to recommend approval of the location to the board.

The meeting was held June 20.

“We had two property owners that are right next to (the parcels) that they were for it, and we did have one email from a gentleman that lives nearby and he is interested in some things as this goes forward,” Hawthorne said, noting the issues in the email were not directly related to the convenience center location.

After Hawthorne’s address, the board voted to approve the convenience site location.

Following the board’s decision, Hawthorne said the four-acre parcels on Gary Road and Oral Oaks Road would need to be surveyed and plans would need to be arranged to begin constructing the convenience center.
