Central golf returns five

The Central High School varsity golf team enjoys the benefit of continuity this season as all of its 2016 members are back looking for another year with a good postseason run.
The Chargers finished second in the conference last year and advanced to regional play.
Taking over as head coach this season is Richard McDaniel, who was a volunteer assistant coach for Central last year and who has been playing golf for more than 30 years.
He expressed optimism about what the Chargers can accomplish this season.
“With all players returning, I feel we should be competitive and be able to advance to postseason play,” he said.
The team consists of two seniors, two juniors and two sophomores.
The seniors include Cary Parrish and Noah Dunbar, the latter of whom is returning to the team after a two-year hiatus.
The juniors include McDaniel’s twin sons, Joseph and Thomas, and the sophomores include Mason Elliott and Cole Williams.
Coach McDaniel said he does not see a clear No. 1 player yet.
“I think it’s pretty much up for grabs, especially among Cary, Cole and my two,” he said. “They can all compete. And Noah’s good, he’s just been playing football and baseball, but he’s a good athlete, so get some practice in, and he’ll be up there. And this is Mason’s second year playing, and so I don’t really expect anybody to really totally outshine everybody else.”
Teams can only play six players in a match, but McDaniel is not closing the door to more members.
“We’re pretty much set, but we’re always looking for new talent,” he said. “We do have two seniors that will graduate, and I don’t know of a whole lot of extras that are eighth graders, so we’ll definitely be looking for anybody that does want to tryout and at least be a part of the team.”

Central opens its season Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Briery Country Club, where it will face Randolph-Henry and Halifax County high schools.
