Board delineates responsibilities

As the search begins to replace Beverly Hawthorne, County Administrator Tracy Gee, Executive Assistant Gail Gregoric and District Two Supervisor Mike Hankins will assume designated responsibilities included in the now-vacant position of economic and community development director.
Hawthorne was recently named community and economic development manager with the City of Emporia.
Gregoric is assuming the responsibilities with the county’s ongoing Joint Comprehensive Plan between the county and Kenbridge and Victoria. She will also serve as a planning commission representative with the assistance of Gee, who will attend meetings with her.
Gee volunteered to take a position as an alternate on the Commonwealth Regional Council (CRC), noting she currently attends as in her role as county administrator.
Gee said she also volunteered to take on the position as clerk for the area Industrial
Development Authority (IDA) and serve as contact for the Virginia Tobacco Commision.

Hankins volunteered to take a position as an alternate with the Virginia Growth Alliance (VGA), of which the county is a member.
The positions were approved by the county’s board of supervisors Thursday.
Other potential positions would be discussed among staff in the county administrator’s office this week, Gee said.
Regarding other vacancies, the county’s Social Services Board has two openings, Gee said.
The board meets every month, and the openings are available to citizens who live in the Districts One and Six.
The board focuses on matters related with the county’s Department of Social Services, and meetings take place on the third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m.
Gee said preferred applicants are those who have experience in social services, or who have worked with organizations relating to addressing and combating social issues, such as poverty.

An opening on the county’s the board of zoning appeals was recently filled by Paul Perusse, of Kenbridge.
