According to a press release, Willie “Roy” Moore served Lunenburg County in various capacities for almost 60 years.

“In recognition of this public servant, a portrait of Mr. Moore will be unveiled on Sunday, Sept. 10 … at 2 p.m. in the courts complex at Lunenburg Courthouse.   The portrait, by Fran Willis, of Victoria, will later be permanently placed in the county’s historic 1827 courthouse,” officials said.

“Moore’s career in public service started in 1930 when he began work in the county treasurer’s office as deputy treasurer, a position he held until 1942 when he became commissioner of the revenue for Lunenburg. Moore held the elected constitutional office of commissioner of the revenue until he became clerk of the court in 1961. He was elected repeatedly to the latter position until his retirement in 1989.”

Officials said in the release that during his long tenure in Lunenburg, “Moore had the occasion to meet many of the citizens of the county whom he helped with many issues, whether a question of taxation, estate settlement or search of public records. It was said that he probably knew personally more local families than anyone else in Lunenburg County at the time of his retirement. His affable manner made him a friend of all.”
