Central High School’s varsity football team got its first win of the season Friday night, and it came in lopsided fashion, with the Chargers shutting out visiting Cumberland County High School 47-0.
“We played really well,” Central Head Coach Will Thomas said. “Cumberland’s having a tough time with their football team, kind of like we are, but it was good that we really played well… offensively and defensively.”
The Chargers were able to spread the ball around with a variety of different players reaching the end zone.
Junior Dontae Crowder had eight carries for 105 yards and a touchdown, and he also registered a 50-yard touchdown catch.
Sophomore T’zion Wilkerson carried the ball seven times for 76 yards and a score, sophomore Darien Jones gained 61 yards and a touchdown on four carries and senior Khamell Roberts ran for a 33-yard touchdown.
Roberts also went 1-for-1 passing for 50-yard touchdown.
Junior Jackson Dalton was 2-for-2 passing for 60 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior Hunter Rutledge had a 40-yard scoring catch, and senior Darryl Jones had a 20-yard touchdown catch.
“We got a lot of people to play and all that good stuff, so it was good,” Thomas said.
In terms of standouts, the coach said Tuesday, “Our defense played so well the other night.”
The Chargers held the Dukes to only five first downs and 140 yards of total offense.
“Khalil Wood had a really good game,” Thomas said. “Dawson Bishop had a really good game.”
He also highlighted Darien Jones and Darryl Jones.
Wood, a sophomore, led the team with 13 total tackles, including one solo tackle and one tackle for loss. Junior Gee Ragsdale recorded 11 tackles, including one solo and three for loss. Senior Jackson Parsons had nine tackles, one solo and two for loss, and senior Ben Spencer also had nine tackles.
The Chargers (1-4) host Bluestone High School on Friday at 7 p.m.
Thomas said the Barons are a “really good team, really talented, got a lot of good skill players. Their defense is really solid. … I mean, they really come after you, so we’re going to have our work cut out for us.”
He noted their defensive line and senior linebacker Cameron Tucker are strong, and on offense, Bluestone throws the ball well.
