Roby receives honor

Alice Rudd Roby, of Kenbridge, the organizing president of the local Meherrin chapter of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, was recently honored by the chapter with the dedication of its new biennial yearbook to her.
Roby served in this founding capacity during the formation of the chapter, beginning July 30, 1996. On March 20, 1997, when the Meherrin Chapter was officially chartered, she became its first president.
Roby then served two terms as president, from 1997 until 2001. During her tenure, Roby gave unselfishly of her time and talents to build a strong foundation for the Meherrin chapter.
She remains a capable and willing helper and mentor to all members and prospective members.
Roby is a native of Lunenburg County. She was married 71 years to Ethelbert “Thelbert” Starkey Roby, Jr., who passed away at the age of 99 last year on July 24.
Their two sons are Bert and wife Martha, and Bill and wife Teresa.
Their grandchildren are Reesa and husband Brian Woodman, William and wife Lin, Edward and wife Megan, and Taylor and wife Kim; and great grandchildren Lauren, Caleb, and Ava Grey Woodman.
