Accompanying the successful 2017 season of Central High School’s varsity softball team were three All-Region 1A East selections and six All-Conference 42 honors for its players, with senior Kayla Anthony emerging as a first-team utility player at both levels. She also made the Group 1A all-state second team.
“Kayla is a very versatile player and in the past years has played outfield and infield in addition to her new role this year as catcher,” Lady Chargers Head Coach Karen McGrath said. “She is a player that can play most positions on the field. She also has a large number of putouts as compared to other players in the conference and region.”
Anthony, who made the all-conference second team last year as a utility player, finished this season with a .339 batting average, a .435 on-base percentage and a .995 fielding percentage.
Junior Hailey Bayne repeated as an all-conference first team and all-region second team pitcher, which McGrath attributed to her tremendous amount of strikeouts, low percentage of walks and overall ERA.
“Hailey has 221 strikeouts for the season and an ERA of 2.28,” the coach said. “She had a strong offensive presence too. Her batting average was .349 with an on-base percentage of .461. Her fielding percentage was .984 with one defensive error on the season.”
In her first year playing for the Central varsity softball team, senior outfielder Dominique Turman-Watson made the all-conference first team and all-region second team.
“Dominique played her position well,” McGrath said. “She made incredible catches in the outfield. She had just two defensive errors all season, including the postseason.”
Turman-Watson had a .294 batting average with 19 RBIs. She had a .310 on-base percentage and a .818 fielding percentage.
Lady Chargers making the all-conference second team included junior outfielder Kaylee Williams, sophomore third baseman Emma Hart and freshman shortstop Sorie Scott.
