Stepping up to the plate

Three state ball tournaments will be in full swing this weekend.

The Lunenburg County Youth Baseball League (LCYBL) is hosting both the State Dixie Youth Baseball Major League All-Star Tournament at the Lenhart Field in Victoria and the State Dixie Youth Baseball AA Machine Pitch All-Star Tournament at Neblett Field, Dispatch Sports Editor Titus Mohler reported last week.

The Lunenburg Girls’ Softball (LGS) is hosting the State Dixie Soft Angels All-Star Tournament at its complex in Kenbridge.

The community should expect a flurry of traffic over the weekend and a host of skilled, energetic players between 7 to 12 years old and their families.

There’s concessions to sell, fields to till and rake and lots of other work to be done.

LCYBL President David Clark is encouraging members of the community to step up to the plate and take a swing, if you will, and volunteer for the three tournaments.

For those who live in the county and in the towns of Kenbridge and Victoria, this could be a good chance to cultivate community pride and to support local and state players who have trained this year to take on the dusty fields and summer heat for the hope of a state championship title.

Clark can be reached for volunteer inquiries or additional questions at (434) 917-9106.

Now that community members have had their team huddle, here’s a special message for all of the players and coaches.

When you step up to bat, or prepare to throw that starting pitch, take a deep breath. You have already put in so much work. Now is the time to have fun, to meet new peers from all over the state and enjoy the thrill of the game.
