Victoria Monogram Club reunites for twice annual meeting

Approximately 40 members of the Victoria Monogram Club gathered Friday night for one of the club’s twice annual meetings, continuing the legacy of a group which has existed for 90 years. Club member Judge William Wellons explained that to be a member, individuals had to have lettered in a sport or have been a manager of a sports team at Victoria High School, which closed in 1966. He said some members are graduates of Central High School, but they still played sports at Victoria High School before it closed. Reflecting on club functions from the past, Wellons noted there were initiations for individuals who joined and “each year we had an annual Monogram dinner and dance, which was a pretty big affair during the Christmas holidays.” These days, “we have one meeting on Friday night before the annual Victoria High School reunion, and then we have another meeting in December before Christmas,” Wellons said, adding that the meetings have pretty good attendance considering the distance a lot of people have to travel. He estimated that average attendance to club meetings at this point is probably in the 30s. Friday’s dinner took place at Victoria Golf Club, and a special guest was George Triplett, beloved head football coach at Victoria High School in 1956.
