Organizers of The Wesley D. (Peewee) Adams Memorial Scholarship, named after a longtime Lunenburg sheriff, are accepting applicants for students working in law enforcement.

Casey Adams, a lifelong Kenbridge resident, owner of Kenbridge Supply Co. Inc. and Wesley’s son, said the scholarship was started by the Lunenburg Chamber of Commerce after Wesley’s unexpected death in 2004.

Wesley, 57 at the time he died, had been the sheriff of Lunenburg County. Casey said Wesley had been sworn in as Lunenburg Sheriff in 1991.

“He was a well-known and well-liked sheriff in the county,” Casey said. Casey said Wesley had worked in law enforcement for most of his life, having served as an officer with the Kenbridge Police Department and a deputy with the Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office before being appointed sheriff.

According to documentation from the chamber, the scholarship provides $500 to any applicant from Lunenburg County “who will be enrolling in college the award year and plans to pursue a career in law enforcement or related field.”

Casey said the scholarship can also apply to students who are studying forensics.

Concerning the fields of study centered in the scholarship, “that was … set at the beginning just because that’s what (Wesley) did,” Casey said.

Casey said students can reapply for the scholarship, saying in the past they have awarded recipients who have applied and received the scholarship before.

Casey said in recent years, the scholarship has not received applicants. He said this was in part to being diagnosed with cancer and not being available to head the scholarship process.

He said applicants can pick up applications for the scholarship at Kenbridge Supply Co. located at 311 Broad St. or at the Central High School Guidance Office.

He said the deadline for the application is tentatively scheduled for April 26.

Casey said he works to give students time to apply, saying he has accepted late applicants.
