Central High School’s varsity golf team made the big leap up to second place this year in the elite field that competes at the Virginia High School League Class 1 State Tournament after placing third the past two years.
The Chargers produced an 18-hole team score of 352 on Tuesday, Oct. 15, to place second in the eight-team field competing at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech in Radford.
“(I’m) extremely proud of their accomplishments this season,” Chargers Head Coach Richard McDaniel said.
George Wythe High School, of Wytheville, won with a team score of 306. Auburn High School placed third with a 361. Individually, Central senior Cole Williams placed sixth out of 58 golfers with a score of 82.
The second-best individual score for the Chargers came from freshman Parker Hite, who was tied for 12th overall with an 87. Rounding out the contributors to Central’s team score were senior Austin Hall, with a 91, and junior Hogan Whitlow, with a 92.
Central won the James River District regular season championship, finishing 18-2, and the team went on to win its third Class 1 Region B championship in a row.
The Chargers lose Williams, Hall and Mason Elliott due to graduation after this season but should have a strong returning group.
