Residents from Lunenburg, Charlotte, Prince Edward and around the region poured into downtown Farmville on Saturday. Some waved flags and others had USA painted on their faces. People came to take part in the ‘Salute to Service’, the Veterans’ Day tribute organized outside of Three Roads Brewing.

In fact, it was almost a festival atmosphere, with food, music and a ceremony set up to honor those who served. Purple Heart recipients, Korean War veterans, Vietnam veterans, Gold Star families and those who served in more recent conflicts like Operation: Desert Storm and Operation: Enduring Freedom were all recognized. Veterans received a special commemorative cup, complete with a free beer.

But beyond that, the event, which ran from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., also provided an opportunity to help veterans. Tables were set up and organizations brought in to answer questions. Veterans had a chance to learn about benefits offered and, talking with both the VFW and American Legion, could find out about local events taking place.

Pictured here are veterans from different military branches and organizations, carrying their respective flags.
