Did you know butterflies rest when it rains?

When a storm is coming, a butterfly seeks shelter from the wind and rain in order to make sure its wings don’t become damaged. When the sky darkens, a butterfly immediately searches for a place to hide and rest for the protection their delicate, beautiful wings need.

Let’s think about this fact for a moment. Butterflies are smart enough to not tempt fate. They ain’t got to prove they are strong enough. They don’t feel like they have to show off their toughness. Butterflies don’t feel as if they must impress other butterflies with being stronger, better, tougher, more skilled.

Nope…butterflies all hide when they sense the storms coming because they know it is for their own well being and safety. Hmmmm….what if we were that smart?

You see, seeking shelter in the storm doesn’t mean they can’t fly. We see them flying. We love watching butterflies. We enjoy seeing them dip and dive. It is awesome to watch one land on someone’s finger and slowly flap and catch their breath before flying off again. They are absolutely beautiful. I have yet in my 45 years of life to meet someone who despises butterflies. Not flying during storms doesn’t mean they’re weak. Not flying during the storms doesn’t mean they aren’t skilled. Not flying during storms doesn’t mean they’re scared. What it means is they are extremely smart and protective of themselves.

Are you ready for this? It’s ok to rest during the storms of life. Elijah hit a storm in life where he kept trying to push forward and ended up running and hiding (1 Kings 18 & 19). You see, he wasn’t seeking shelter during the storms of life and his wings were starting to take the hit. God provided a nap and a snack for him and shelter during a time of need. Multiple times king David hid in caves or pulled away from folks during storms. Shoot, even Jesus had moments where He needed to step away from the crowds to pray and gain strength. Jesus asks us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves (Mark 12). We can’t truly help others if we aren’t taking care of ourselves.

Are you in a storm of life right now? Is the devil beating down on you with doubt, fear, anxiety, stress, worry, concerns? Does it seem as if a dark cloud is just hovering over you? Are you plugged in with a church family who lovingly covers, protects and provides? It’s needed! Life is hard! It’s ok to rest during the storms of life. You’ll be able to fly again once the storm is over.
