Your article on a proposed literacy program was excellent and music to my ears. I see that there is money available for helping recover from learning losses due to COVID, and I think that a literacy program is certainly a good way to address at least one part of those learning losses.

In fact, any argument against funding such a program makes no sense at all. Without being able to read, the likelihood of taking in any education is severely limited if not impossible.

I am fortunate to have had parents who read to me every evening. They also pointed out signs, etc. as we drove in the car. They showed me the words to songs that we heard on the radio. I excelled in school, especially the language arts and history, even science. They unlocked the magic of words and of understanding the world around me and of being able to compose a sensible sentence.

I cannot imagine how anyone could be aware of the difficulty students of all grades would suffer, if they do not learn to read and read well. I wish for this program’s approval and its success.

My next letter will be to the Lunenburg school system urging them to undertake such a sooooo very important endeavor.
